Faster Transitions: Free Time in T1 & T2
Transition is the fourth discipline of triathlon. T1 (swim-to-bike) and T2 (bike-to-run) are where races are quietly won or lost — and unlike fitness, the time you save there is free.
Most newcomers lose a minute or more fumbling in transition — the time it would take months of training to shave off the bike. The good news: transitions are pure practice. Rehearse the sequence enough and it becomes muscle memory, so on race day your mind is calm while your hands do the work. We drill T1 and T2 repeatedly at camp until the flow is automatic.
T1 — swim to bike
- Know your exact spot and approach the rack from the same line every time.
- Wetsuit or top off on the move; helmet on and buckled before you touch the bike.
- Sunglasses, then shoes — or clip shoes to the pedals and mount with them on.
- Walk or run the bike to the mount line; only clip in past it.
T2 — bike to run
- Start easing effort and freeing your feet in the last stretch of the bike.
- Rack the bike, helmet off, run shoes on — elastic laces save fumbling.
- Grab your race number and go; the legs will feel strange, that is normal.
Rehearse it until it is boring. On race day, a boring transition is a fast transition.
We set up a full transition area at camp and run it again and again — with bike handling, mounting and dismounting, and the little decisions that add up to free seconds.
